Gratitude: Week 46 (May 7 - May 13)

I was thinking about Mother's Day and how different it is today, reflecting on memories of my mother and the trauma that has affected her life. Becoming more curious about the woman and her vacant stare, a sadness that consumes my attention as memories blur from jubilant to somber.

Perhaps this disease was a distraction from the anguish of her past, an escape from the difficulties that devoured her soul, dispensing a slow drift to a place of wonder where heartbreak can no longer haunt her.

It is difficult for us, those who survive to witness a mother's decline, but maybe we can uncover another lesson in gratitude. Unraveling the gratitude for all she gave when she could, for doing her best regardless of her circumstances. Recalling the selfless ways she lived her life and the peaceful transition she provided as we moved into another season.

Today she is hidden in a tangled world of difficulty where a glimmer of recognition resides in her eyes. Slowly I untangle the grief and reveal the gratitude. Observing the illuminated moments as I step into her view. Grateful for the idyllic childhood she provided amidst her own anguish, and grateful for the woman I call mom to still be with us.

Technology:

A blessing and a curse, technology should provide us so much time yet we squander it with its powerful appeal. Technology is reminding me to return to the simple days of life where I unplug and discover peace.
