We win by tenderness. We conquer by forgiveness. ~Frederick William Robertson
The Year of Focus: Week 15
Word of the Week: Forgiveness
noun
Forgiveness can be a thorny conversation. There are things that feel too painful to forgive, but holding on to bitterness will eventually decay you from the inside. Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, nor is forgiveness for the person who you feel wronged you. It is instead, a gift for yourself, by releasing the hurt you are harboring.
Sometimes I have a difficult time forgiving myself for things like not speaking up when I should or poor decisions when I did not know better. I guess that too is a part of learning how both speaking out or staying quiet can come with their own set of consequences and what would I change in the future?
It took me a long time to forgive God when we lost Ryan, and the first step of my learning was to forgive myself when I recognized that God was not to blame, there was nobody to blame.
Sometimes the person we need to forgive is ourselves, for being human with our judgement, mistakes or immature actions. When we can accept our whole imperfect selves, we learn and grow and discover the softening in forgiveness. Like the words of Maya Angelous, "When you know better, you do better."
