Week 23: Lessons from a friend

Throughout my life, friendship has always felt easy. I meet someone with a common interest, and as we discover other commonalities our friendship grows. Over the years I have built these relationships through crafts, exercise work and the love of writing. These connections are never about keeping score. They have become a place to find buoyancy when sinking, provide a listening ear for heartache and joy, and celebrating through life’s achievements.  I am grateful for all the friendships I have built throughout the years.

Recently I started analyzing my views on friendship. What does it take to be a friend and have friends. With this questioning I was reminded of the importance of being a friend to myself.  This relationship of trial-and-error prompts me to love myself and take up the space that I need.   A revolution of the strength and stillness I deem necessary to be my own advocate.  Understanding the quiet I require to then be available for others is crucial. 

As a caregiver, I have found myself drained when taking care of others. It was in this depletion that I discovered how much I needed this care and friendship with myself.  A journey to uncover the things I need to love and fulfill all the pieces of me without criticism of judgment.  Friendship is always important, but it all begins with loving yourself first.
