The future lies before you, like a field of fallen snow; Be careful how you tread it, for every step will show.
Week 11: How meditation can help
I have started and stopped meditation many times over the last few years. Usually stopping has more to do with falling off the habit than a choice to quit. Increasingly I am reminded of the benefits of meditation and decided to give it a go once again. Getting curious of my expectations by wrangling the endless chatter of thought through a guided meditation that teaches the need to accept where we are.
To begin this practice all you need is a few minutes a day to be present. Start by finding a home base, like your breath or a place to return your attention to when you get distracted. This could be the feel of your breath, a mantra of breathing in and breathing out, or any other sound or sensation that will root you in the present. Since returning to this practice I am interested in learning while letting go of potentials. Meditation is not about right or wrong, but instead a returning to the breath, again and again.
It is the knowing of our brains and how there is a constant flow of thoughts. Our job is to allow them to come and go without judgement, and then return to your home base. Through guided meditations, I have rediscovered ways to release the tether of thoughts and return again and again to my breathing. Those few minutes in the morning devoted to stillness have already proven to be worthwhile, reminding me to breathe throughout my day. This is an invitation to a better mental mindset that guides me. A practice that reminds us to breath and be, as we discover the power in being present
