Being Me: Week 19 (Why we judge)

Being Me: Week 19 (Judgment and why we judge)

May theme: The difference between a flower and a weed is judgment

All judgment is self judgment. When you see things you do not like in others, you are actually recognizing something you are judging within yourself. The things that bother us that other people do are usually pretty close to attributes of ourselves we do not like.

"We see the world as 'we' are, not as 'it' is; because it is the "I" behind the 'eye' that does the seeing." ~Anais Nin

A recent article in Psychology today explained how our brains are wired to make automatic judgements about others’ behaviors, so that we can move through the world without spending too much time or energy on understanding everything we see. But without taking a moment to understand our judging ways, we are unable to recognize or change them.

The understanding of why we judge is another part of mindfulness. While we are busy doing and analyzing the world around us, the doing mind recalls, plans and compares. But when we come back to a mindful state we recognize our senses to see, hear, touch, smell and taste things, opening up to a curiosity we had forgotten about.

When I recognize what is happening within, I must also be aware of the outside world in each moment that helps to shape my thoughts.

If you are seeking to change your "judging" ways, start by noticing when a judgmental feeling or thought arises and analyze why it looks familiar. Soon you will  start to dissect the common ways we judge. This understanding of yourself  will help you examine the engrained patterns you have set, and with patience and time learn to untangle them.
