Hooked on a feeling

As Deb and I spend our days together, traveling to therapy and other adventures we always enjoy listening to the 70's station and sing along to most of the songs. They say music is good therapy in itself and I get to enjoy her laughter as we reminisce about songs of our childhood, and sometimes it's just a welcome distraction from the repeated questions that still come. 

This journey with Deb is not a sprint, but rather a distance race, like a marathon. It is going to take a lot of time for her to regain her independence. For Gordon, this is his life, every waking moment is in contemplation of what he can do to get Deb better today. Always searching for the next step in her wellness.

We attend many support groups, it is amazing what a difference they make in our mental being. While over time in any situation people lose interest. Its not that they don't care, but when things are not progressing like they thought, they don't know what to say anymore. This is why support groups are so important since we are all going down a similar path. Joel and I went through a similar situation when we lost our son Ryan. Soon people can't relate to your life and don't know what to say, so they say nothing. Life changes, friends change and we grow through these experiences. Please don't leave Deb and Gordon because of your feelings of discomfort, this is when they need support more than ever!

Hanson House is one of the support groups we attend, located in Berea, it is a members only support group and you must be voted in. This past Wednesday it was official as Deb and Gordon and their families were voted into the group. Not only are these people supportive of us, but I can see how much already that Deb and Gordon can give back. They love Deb's sense of humor! Imagine that...

So we will continue on this journey, listening to our 70's songs and looking for ways to help Debbie improve her quality of life and we hope you will all continue along with us.
