As the journey continues

January 25, 2014

We don't receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us.

On Monday I had the opportunity to take Debbie to the dentist for her cleaning and to fix a tooth that was bothering her. We have gone to our family dentist since teenagers, we  know the staff well. Dawn, the hygenist, came out after Deb's cleaning and cried, it was the first time she had seen Deb since before surgery and was both happy for her progress and sad that Deb wasn't "back" yet.

Deb and I enjoyed lunch at our favorite restaurant in Middleburg Heights, Wah Fu, which is located in the strip where Deb worked in a hair salon for years. Knowing the owners of the restaurant and Deb's usual friendly attitude, she told the owner "have a good Christmas" to which he looked at her confused? As we walked to the car Deb asked "why did he give me a funny look?" I told her that it was January and Christmas was over. She kinda joked about her saying that to him but soon after began talking about Christmas again...

Our next stop was Medina Hospital where she receives her speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. In speech they are teaching her to use her planner where she will find her daily plans to help her learn. When she questions where she should be we cannot give her the answers, she needs to look in her planner. This will take time and patience, but I could see the difference in just this step. And while I always want to help her with the answers, I am learning that is not what she needs to improve... she needs to learn that this planner is her "new best friend

When Mary her speech therapist said "whose your best friend?" she replied "Tina"  making us all chuckle...

more to come...  On Thursday we had a day of doctors downtown and Friday was more therapy
